Brodawel B&B
Eighteen years strong...
…and the future looks bright at Bro Dawel
How may businesses can boast an eighteen year old smoking ban record? Look no further than Pat Griffiths, pioneering owner of the Brodawel bed and breakfast. She is more than just an enthusiastic supporter of the anticipated smoking ban; she has already put it into action!
BroDawel, a homely Edwardian house with uninterrupted views across Cardigan Bay is a home from home for many travelers and tourists. Pat cooks up fantastic breakfasts and provides a few other treats for guests, including a pair of binoculars for observing the wildlife. Just don’t expect to find ashtrays anywhere!
Pat says, “Eighteen years ago we bit the bullet and banned smoking at our B&B. The last straw came when I had just decorated my lounge and two men started smoking cigars. Within the space of half an hour, all that money and good work was in ruins and I decided then and there to ban smoking. It just takes so long to get rid of that smell.
“Back then, there was no such thing as the internet so we had to work hard to advertise the fact that we were a no-smoking B&B. I was nervous about losing customers, but, in fact I gained more! Even the guests who had smoked still came.
“My husband and I have never smoked and we used to run a pub where we allowed smoking but unfortunately had to blitz clean the place every few weeks or so just to get rid of the stale smell – believe me that was a lot of work!
“My son is an asthmatic which I’m sure is due to the fact he used to do chalet work in France where everyone used to smoke around him. I just don’t think it’s fair on non-smokers who have to suffer the effects because of other people’s cigarette smoke. “
