Launched on St David’s day 2005, Wrexham-based 1st Call Personnel recruitment consultants knew they wanted their offices to be clean, healthy and sweet smelling! They have been smoke-free since day one, and Managing Director Susan Capstick would never have had it any other way.
“As far as I’m concerned, apart from the unpleasantness of passive smoking and its health implications, it looks quite dreadful to have staff standing outside having a cigarette in the cold and rain. It’s not really the professional image we want to convey. Smoking is prohibited throughout our premises and staff and customers are asked not to do so nearby. People don’t like to be ostracized so not having anywhere nearby to smoke pretty much resolves that!
“There have been no problems with staff, and those that do smoke appreciate the tough love – it does help them to cut down. Anybody wanting to quit is given real encouragement; after all, looking after your staff is part and parcel to the success of any business.”
1st Call’s work is all about getting the right job for the right person. Extinguishing their cigarettes before stepping inside comes naturally to members of the public, because they know they’re entering a professional environment- and a good impression always helps.
In terms of advice for others, Susan assures businesses that in today’s world, people accept there’s little room for smoking in the workplace and a clean smell makes for a warm welcome.
