New smoke-free resolution…
…is Bloomin' marvellous

New Year has brought with it a joint resolution for community group Bettws in Bloom – introducing a new smoke-free policy ahead of the ban in April.

A real success story of a group of local people coming together for the good of the community, Bettws in Bloom started out as a crack at the Britain in Bloom competition in 1998. It has now grown into an Environmental Community Association of six volunteers, with a venue that functions as an information centre, a youth centre and facilities that cater for conferences.

Treasurer Susan Baker said, “I hope the smoking ban here will help people re-think about lighting up.  The centre is used more and more by people from all sorts of background. We have a mother and toddler group, the Brownies, and people like Trade Unions holding their meetings here, so the new law will mean that the air will always be fresh and clean for one and all.”

The decision taken by the committee’s Trustees, four of whom are smokers themselves, has already yielded results - with two members having given up completely and the other two successful in cutting down.  The charity’s looking forward to playing an even bigger part in the community this year, with Bettws smelling all the sweeter and certainly cleaner in 2007.
