Secrets of smoke free success
at Coedllys Country House
Tucked away in a delightful and tranquil location set against the rolling green Carmarthenshire countryside, Coedllys Country House, run by Valerie and Keith Harber, offers 5 star accommodation and service and a smoke free welcome for guests. According to the owners, the secret of their success in running an award-winning guesthouse has been their smoke free policy, implemented from the very first day they opened 11 years ago.
The impetus to open a smoke-free guest house came from an unpleasant experience at their home many years ago. Valerie and Keith hosted a dinner party one evening and whilst cleaning up the next morning, Valerie noticed someone had stubbed cigarettes out down the back of the sofa! Luckily, as the sofa was made of horse hair it didn’t catch alight but since the scare, Valerie and Keith have had no qualms about enforcing a strict no smoking policy at their guest house.
Whether staying for business, a 'special' romantic break or celebrating a special occasion, guests return time and time again for a smoke free stay. Built around 1810, Coedllys Uchaf, which translates from the Welsh language to Upper Woodland Court, is over 190 years old and was the first guesthouse to be awarded the prestigious 5 Star award in Carmarthenshire by the Welsh Tourist Board. Business definitely doesn’t suffer from its smoke free status!
Valerie and Keith Harber explain, “As non-smokers ourselves, it seemed right to open a smoke-free guest house. Smokers come here as well as non smokers. We get a few trying to be smart and light up a cigarette but we have to put our foot down. We’ve always made it clear we are a smoke free guesthouse, our website has a number of no smoking signs so guests know what to expect. We want our guests to enjoy their time here breathing in fresh country air instead of a lungful of smoke.”
